Wood Fire
Available in cooler months only and we will supply the firewood. Some guests need extra instructions so here we goโฆ
On your first night
Weโve already set the fire for you ๐ If youโre not familiar with lighting fires, take a good look at how the wood is arranged in a rough pyramid shape with smaller pieces at the bottom.
- Just light the fire lighters that we've placed amongst the wood.
- Keep the door open a few centimetres until the fire is roaring.
- If needed you can now add some large pieces of wood.
- When roaring, close the door and keep the flu fully open (round knob under the door handle in the upward position) so it getโs reaaaaaally hot.
- When roaring again, close the flu (round knob in the downward position) a little to the point where you still see a little flame. This is important, because the flame is required to ignite all the gases so they donโt go into the atmosphere (a cleaner burn). It will get hotter too as youโre not letting in as much cool air and the fire box itself heats up.
Starting a fire from scratch
Basic rule is to start small.
- Make sureย the flu is fully open (round knob under the door handle in the upward position).
- Start adding very small pieces of kindling in a rough pyramid, put a few firelighters amongst them and light the firelighters.
- Carefully add the next size up kindling, building on the loose pyramid shape. Too much kindling added too densely will extinguish the flame.
- Keep the door open a few centimetres.
- When the kindling is alight without the aid of the firelighters, add about 3 or 4 larger pieces of wood.
- When the larger pieces are alight, close the door and keep the flu fully open (round knob under the door handle in the upward position. It will take another 10 minutes for the heater to get hot.
- Close the flu to slow down the burn but where you still see some flame. This is important so the flame can ignite the gases instead of them going into the atmosphere (creating an environmentally cleaner burn). It will get hotter too as youโre not letting in as much cool air and the fire box itself heats up.
When going to bed
If only coals are left you can close the flu completely (round knob in the down position) as that will keep the fireplace hot overnight. Otherwise, leave the flu open a little so the gases can be burnt.
